Remedy’s Control E3 preview has all sorts of topsy-turvy action

The Sony E3 2018 Media Briefing displayed some impressive gameplay footage from games like Naughty Dog’s The Last of Us 2, Sucker Punch’s Ghost of Tsushima (my personal favorite), and Insomniac’s Spider-Man. One game that piqued a lot of gamers’ interest was the reveal of Control by Remedy Entertainment, the development team behind Quantum Break, Alan Wake, and Max Payne. I wasn’t sure what to make of the gameplay footage shown since it was all over the place… literally. But there were enough design and gameplay elements that made me think it was a Remedy game. With Quantum Break, your character can play with time, but with Control, the character is playing with the mind.

Publisher 505 Games and developer Remedy’s Control, previously known as P7, is a third-person action-adventure shooter with an ever-changing sandbox-style world. You play as Jesse Faden (Courtney Hope), the new Director of the Federal Bureau of Control, who has supernatural abilities. You’ll wander around the world as it warps all around you, and you’ll use your gunplay, supernatural and telekinetic skills to gain control. (I see what they did there.)

If you were left with a confused expression after watching the trailer, then the gameplay walkthrough we saw at E3 won’t help you out since there’s more weirdness abound. Control is what happens when Remedy takes the core gameplay mechanics of Quantum Break and mixes it with elements from Doctor Strange, Inception and Rez, the musical rail shooter. What we do know about the story is that something called the Hiss is causing the members of the Bureau to behave erratically and warping reality in the FBC building called the Oldest House.

There will be elements of Metroidvania where Jesse will need to explore an area again, and there will be side missions! This is a first for a Remedy game since their previous games have been very linear. In the demo we saw, Jesse encountered a man inside a room staring at a refrigerator. Apparently one needs to stare at the fridge at all times or else it will devour them. He’s asking her for help, but she has pressing matters to attend to. Sorry, dude.

The main weapon of choice is a firearm that can shapeshift to aid Jesse. With her telekinetic powers, she can bring debris towards her to form a protective shield, and she can lift objects and throw them at enemies. To take it one step further, she’ll also be able to lift herself to access hard-to-reach areas… or just become a badass.

Control will be available for the PlayStation 4, Xbox One and PC in 2019. With Alan Wake and Quantum Break being exclusive to Microsoft, this should make PlayStation fans happy.
