Soulcalibur VI: What’s new and what’s returning

Bandai Namco is planning a SoulCalibur VI, the sixth installment of the fighting game franchise. What makes the series different from other fighting games is the focus on melee weapons. The upcoming game was present during E3 2018, and attendees got the chance to play the game before its release in October. New characters like Geralt of Rivia from the Witcher series and Groh were available to play, along with characters like Nightmare, Max, Kilik, Ivy, Taki, and more.

As a fan of the Witcher series, I was excited to play as Geralt, who will have all of his special signs available including Igni. Doug Cockle, who voiced Geralt in CD Projekt Red’s The Witcher series, reprises his role.

Don’t expect anything revolutionary for the core gameplay, since you’ll still have your horizontal strike, vertical strike, block and kick. Critical Edge makes a return and these act as your super move. Soul Charge, the ability to power your character’s attacks for a limited time, will have an overhaul.

There is a new battle mechanic called Reversal Edge, and this will allow newcomers to the series a fighting chance. By performing the move, you can parry an enemy’s attack, and time will slow down to allow both players to choose between three attack buttons: horizontal strike, vertical strike, or kick. It acts as a minigame of rock, paper scissors, and the one who has the winning attack will get the upper hand.

For fans of battle-damage outfits, the Lethal Hit battle mechanic will allow you to chip away at a character’s costume. This can lead to the characters being in just their underwear at the end of a match. (Check out the video below for an example.)

And if you’re in it for the story, there’s the Chronicle Story Mode. It will follow characters quest for the Soul Edge and their motivations.

Characters revealed so far include Geralt of Rivia, Groh, Ivy, Kilik, Mitsurugi, Nightmare, Siegfried, Sophitia, Taki, Xianghua, Zasalamel.

Synopsis: Taking place in the 16th century, SOULCALIBUR VI sets players on a voyage of discovery as they uncover events from the original SOULCALIBUR to learn hidden truths. The game will also feature a diverse line-up of new and returning characters with their unique fighting styles and weapons including series mainstays; Mitsurugi and Sophitia and newcomers such as special guest-character, Geralt of Rivia, from CD Projekt Red’s The Witcher series and GrØh who was recently announced.

For the hardcore of fans, Bandai Namco will be releasing two special editions for Soulcalibur VI: the Soulcalibur VI Collector’s Edition and the Deluxe Edition.

Collector’s Edition: 12″ Sophitia Figure, 120-page Art Book, Metal Case with Built-in Soundbox, Soundtrack CD, Collector’s Edition Box, and the full SOULCALIBUR VI game

Deluxe Edition: Metal Case with Built-in Soundbox, Soundtrack CD, SOULCALIBUR VI Season Pass, and the full SOULCALIBUR VI gam
