Life Is Strange spin-off, The Awesome Adventures of Captain Spirit, is about the imagination

The Awesome Adventures of Captain Spirit

Dontnod Entertainment has created a gem with Life Is Strange, a third-person adventure game which follows a teenage girl dealing with school drama. Oh, and she has the power to manipulate time. Your choices can affect the outcome of other characters, and it’s one of the few games that can really take you on a roller coaster of emotions. A prequel was released from developer Deck Nine titled Life Is Strange: Before the Storm while Dontnot was focusing on Vampyr. However, the latter is working on season 2, but before fans can dive into it, they will first release a standalone spinoff next week called The Awesome Adventures of Captain Spirit. We had the chance to check out a 30-minute demo presentation during E3 2018, and it took us on a journey as a 10-year-old boy with a wild imagination.

Right off the bat, I noticed Dontnod is once again using a song in the folk/indie genre, which should be a treat for fans of the Life Is Strange soundtrack. We see Chris, who is playing with his toys and making a toy ship lift off using his imagination. Chris’ imagination can be as simple as using his fingers to interact with an object without touching it or creating sound effects with his mouth. This sets the tone for the rest of the demo where his imagination gets crazier and crazier. His journey of becoming Captain Spirit plays out like an action RPG, where you as the player will have to help him complete his costume. The game gives you the option of customizing your outfit, and for the demo, the final outfit consisted of a colorful, light armor with a mask. Once you have completed this task, we are treated with an anime-inspired costume intro.

We get to meet Chris’ father, who seems to be having a tough time. But he seems cool as he plays along with Chris and his imagination. Life Is Strange tackles some tough and relatable subject matter, and this game is no different. Here, we find out that Chris’ mother is gone, and tension arises when Chris says that he misses his mother’s cooking after eating his dad’s cooking, creating some tension. It also doesn’t help that his dad is cursing in front of him and is drinking during the daytime.

Chris can help around the house, with one of them being to fix the water heater. To make things more fun, Chris imagines the water heater as a giant water beast.

The Awesome Adventures of Captain Spirit will be available for free as a standalone on June 26, 2018, for the PS4, Xbox One and PC.
