Cyberpunk 2077 to feature first-person shooting, nudity and violence

Cyberpunk 2077

During E3 2018, there were many things that were revealed during the hour demo of Cyberpunk 2077, the upcoming sci-fi RPG from CD Projekt Red. The biggest shocker of all is that the game will mainly be a first-person RPG. But what about its mature content? CD Projekt Red hasn’t been shy about violence and nudity in its video games like The Witcher 3: Wild Hunt, and with Cyberpunk 2077, it’ll be no exception.

The game takes place in the future in Night City, Northern California, and it’s home to a lot of people with an affinity towards technological body modifications. Your character goes by the name of V, and you’ll be able to choose between a male or female version, complete with a complex character creation system with his or her own backstory. At the start, the male and female versions are naked (the private parts were blurred for the demo), and for the sake of the presentation, the female version was chosen, sporting a punk rock hairstyle with the side shaved. The jacket is an important item, and it can even give you street cred. And like Mass Effect, your protagonist does talk.

Yes, there have been fans expressing their disappointment that the game is in first-person, but the reason for that is that CD Projekt Red wanted players to feel immersed in Night City. The city is very lively, and it’s populated by loads of NPCs. Some fans wanted to see their created character in third-person view, but you will get to see that during cutscenes. With that said, you will be able to switch between third and first-person, but that’s only when you are inside a car. There will be day and night cycles, and there will be no loading screens at all with your adventures in Night City.

The first mission has you entering a building and finding out what happened to your target. With the help from Jackie Welles, a highly skilled assassin and cyberpunk, you both take out the enemies in the building using guns. Since it’s an RPG, you’ll see numbers popping out as you shoot them to let you know how much damage you’re doing. After you and your partner have taken out all the enemies, you enter the bathroom and discover two naked bodies. One of them is your target, and you’ll be carrying the body all the way out to the front for the Trauma Team to pick her up.

Another exciting feature is the vertical exploration. Night City has megabuildings, and they will be filled with NPCs and quests. V’s apartment is in a megabuilding, and it’s a nice place to get away from all the action… okay, you can still get some action with romance options and one-night stands.

Similar to games like Deus Ex, your character will get enhanced body modifications. With this game, ripperdocs are those who are medical technicians – half doctors, half engineers. In the demo, your ripperdoc is Doctor Victor, who helps you by installing the Kiroshi optical scanner, which gives a player access to an advanced HUD along with being able to zoom in and out. Additionally, he updated V’s hand for improved grip.

Weapons are also enhanced with tech. With the ricochet targeting system, you can aim at a wall and the smart bullets will ricochet off the wall to hit the locked target. V can be very deadly in close combat thanks to the Mantis blades, hidden blades that will pop out of your cybernetic arms. Weapons can also be hacked, and if you time your actions, enemies won’t be able to shoot you. The world of Cyberpunk 2077 is very interactive. One example was seeing a vending machine getting hacked.

Although I’m not a big fan of the current state of the shooting mechanics, I’m very much looking forward to exploring Night City and its megabuildings and streets. Here’s hoping that CD Projekt Red will release more information and gameplay to the public soon.
