It looks like Rick Grimes is hanging up his gun and walking away from the dead.

Andrew Lincoln is reportedly leaving the series after next season. According to Collider, Lincoln will only see the actor in a handful of episodes before he leaves for good. There is no word of how the character is going to leave, but no matter what, it’s going to make a huge impact on the series. Rick Grimes was the central character in the story from the beginning. His absence would leave a huge void in the storyline.

According to the same report, AMC is looking into placing Daryl Dixon (Norman Reedus) in the lead role. Reedus, who has a good relationship with AMC, also has another television series on the network called ‘Ride with Norman Reedus.’

As for another beloved character Maggie Rhee, Lauren Cohen is slated to return next season as well, but with her new ABC pilot Whiskey Cavalier being picked up, it may be her final season as well with AMC. There had been some conflict earlier this year about pay disparity and that may have been the nail in the coffin for Cohen’s relationship with The Walking Dead.

Angela Kang is the showrunner for next season. AMC has not commented whether or not season 9 will be the final season with the news of Lincoln and Cohen’s possible departure.

The Walking Dead will return to AMC on Sunday this fall. AMC has not responded to our request for comment.
