The Last Jedi’s Rian Johnson to create new Star Wars trilogy

Rian Johnson is the director of Star Wars: The Last Jedi, the film that continues Rey’s journey to finding Luke Skywalker. And it looks like Lucasfilm’s Kathleen Kennedy has been very happy with Johnson’s vision of the Star Wars universe that Lucasfilm has decided to put him in charge of a whole new Star Wars trilogy. The announcement was made today in addition to Johnson writing and directing the first of the new trilogy. Ram Bergman, a longtime collaborator, will be producing.

Lucasfilm has revealed that the new trilogy will be separate from the Skywalker saga and will be introducing new characters in an area that hasn’t been explored in Star Wars lore. Lucasfilm and Disney are very proud, calling The Last Jedi a “powerful film.”

And with this announcement, there are many fans hoping that he would adapt the Knights of the Old Republic, the popular Star Wars video game developed by BioWare (Mass Effect trilogy). With new characters and a new location, I doubt Knights of the Old Republic will be on the table.

“We all loved working with Rian on The Last Jedi,” said Kathleen Kennedy, president of Lucasfilm. “He’s a creative force, and watching him craft The Last Jedi from start to finish was one of the great joys of my career. Rian will do amazing things with the blank canvas of this new trilogy.”

“We had the time of our lives collaborating with Lucasfilm and Disney on The Last Jedi,” Johnson and Bergman said in a joint statement. “Star Wars is the greatest modern mythology and we feel very lucky to have contributed to it. We can’t wait to continue with this new series of films.”

Soon fans will be able to check out Johnson’s Star Wars: The Last Jedi when it hits U.S. theaters on December 15, 2017.

Lucasfilm hasn’t yet revealed when the new trilogy will begin.
