Peter Cullen and Frank Welker on Transformers’ Optimus Prime and Megatron

transformers last knight interview peter cullen frank welker

Transformers: The Last Knight is coming to Blu-ray and DVD on September 26th, and we had the chance to chat with iconic voice actors Peter Cullen and Frank Welker, the voice actors behind Optimus Prime and Megatron, respectively.

Cullen talks about how he had to change his Optimus Prime voice from the classic animated TV series to the film version.

Cullen tells Nerd Reactor, “The movie comes along, and Michael Bay said to me, ‘Peter, you’re going to be 45-feet tall.’ So we were in an airplane hangar, and they have a picture of Optimus Prime on top of a crane, so all the actors could relate to where the voice was coming from. ‘Can you make it bigger?’ Because the character is very big. I said, ‘Well, he’s going to sound pretty much the way he sounded.’ And then I thought about it, you know? I saw this mockup and went, ‘No, it has to be lower. It had to be deeper.'”

Frank Welker returns as the voice of Megatron, but he didn’t get the chance to voice the Decepticon leader in all the films.

“If you’ve watched closely, you watch Megatron transform throughout the years,” Welker said. “He always finally gets his way [laughs manically as Megatron].”

You can watch the full video interview below.

In addition, you can check out my attempt at voicing Megatron inside the ADR booth at Paramount Studios.
