John Wick: Chapter Three kicks into theater May 2019

Lionsgate and Summit Entertainment have announced they will release John Wick: Chapter Three in theaters on May 17, 2019.

Keanu Reeves, who plays the title hitman, is expected to return for the third and possibly final film. Lionsgate did purchase a script that could potentially be a spin-off, but not directly be a John Wick film. No details on the plot have been revealed.

The first Rated-R action film starred Reeves as a retired hitman who returns to the crime world after the loss of his loved one. The second film, Chapter Two, has Wick being forced back into the assassin society only to end up going on the run from bounty hunters.

Screenwriter Derek Kolstad, who wrote the previous two films, returns to write the screenplay. Director Chad Stahelski is expected to return for the third film. Stahelski, alongside his partner David Leitch, directed the first John Wick film in 2014 and later went solo on the 2017 sequel, John Wick: Chapter Two. The first film grossed $88 million worldwide. The sequel doubled that with a gross of  $171 million worldwide.

Kolstad had previously mentioned how he’d like the third film to go down. During The Q&A  with Jeff Goldsmith podcast, Kolstad mentioned, “One of the things I would love John to do in the third one is to be excommunicated, broke, begging, in Tokyo or some corner of the Earth that’s sexy and cool and he stumbles upon something that has nothing to do with his journey and he does the right thing. I don’t know what that is yet, but I love the idea that John Wick has done everything for him but if you notice in both movies, he’s actually doing stuff for other people. I want to have a pure innocent in this franchise that propels you forward to ‘oh fuck, how do you end this thing.'”
