Will Smith shares photo of cast from Disney’s live-action Aladdin

Aladdin fans who are looking forward to the live-action adaptation of the classic animated film should be excited about a new set photo released by Will Smith. The actor, who’s playing Genie, posted a selfie with the cast including Mena Massoud (Aladdin), Naomi Scott (Princess Jasmine), and Marwan Kenzari (Jafar). This marks the film recently going into production at Longcross Studios outside London.

The cast looks to be having fun on the set, with Massoud looking the most excited.

We just started shooting Aladdin and I wanted to intro you guys to our new family… Mena Massoud/Aladdin, Naomi Scott/Princess Jasmine, Marwan Kenzari/Jafar, and I’m over here gettin my Genie on. Here we go!

The film is directed by Guy Ritchie (Sherlock Holmes, Snatch) from a screenplay by John August (Dark Shadows, Big Fish). Alan Menken, who did the music for the animated film, will be back to score the live-action version, with new recordings of the original songs by Menken, Howard Ashman (Little Shop of Horrors) and Tim Rice (The Lion King). If that’s not enough for you, there will be two new songs written by Menken and Benj Pasek and Justin Paul (La La Land).

Musical fans may be excited about Disney bringing Pasek and Paul to the team since La La Land became a huge hit with critics, audiences and the box office.

I’m hoping that Ritchie will have the chops to pull off the live-action version of Aladdin. He has been a hit and miss, with his last film being a miss. King Arthur: Legend Of The Sword was a critical failure and bombed at the box office. (It grossed $146 million with a budget of $175 million.)
