New Nintendo 3DS XL Samus Edition coming next month

Samus Edition
Even with the Nintendo Switch selling all kinds of gangbusters, the Big N has not stopped pushing the 3DS. They’re still pumping out major titles for the 6-year-old handheld, including Fire Emblem: Shadows of Valentia, Ever Oasis, and coming next month, Metroid: Samus Returns, the official remake of 1991’s Metroid II: Return of Samus on the GameBoy. The game will launch on September 15, but not alone. Nintendo announced today that they will be releasing a Limited Samus Edition of the New Nintendo 3DS XL, complete with a red and yellow paint, and imprints of Samus Aran and the ScrewAttack logo. This package will run you $199.99, as much as a normal 3DS XL. Unfortunately, it will not come with a copy of the game.

Metroid: Samus Returns is the first mainline Metroid game to be released in seven years (sorry, Federation Force doesn’t count) and the first 2D Metroid game in thirteen years! Even though it’s a remake of Metroid II, the difference between the two games is night and day, with the original being a chore to play thanks to its black-and-white coating and no map. Samus Returns, on the other hand, features redesigned levels and additional gear not present in the original game.

According to some previews, the developers at MercurySteam being led by series creator Yoshio Sakamoto are aiming to make this game the one that pleases fans new and old, potentially bringing in new people to the series. By releasing it on an already popular console like the 3DS may be a great move that could see sales for this game skyrocket, or it could hurt them seeing as the Switch is taking off in terms of sales.

Metroid: Samus Returns releases on September 15 along with the Samus Edition of the New Nintendo 3DS XL. Let us know if you plan on getting one, the other, or both!

l love to play games and write stuff about them. I can't play something and not tell anyone how I feel about it. Call it a sickness, because it is.
