Jessica Chastain gets ready for X-Men: Dark Phoenix as Shi’ar Empress Lilandra

Update: Jessica Chastain reveals that she’s not playing Lilandra.

Jessica Chastain has announced that she’s going to Montreal for the upcoming X-Men: Dark Phoenix film. Why? She’ll be giving James McAvoy, who’s playing Charles Xavier, a tough time by making him “cry hard.” It was reported by THR that Chastain was in talks to play Lilandra Neramani, the Empress (Majestrix) of the Shi’ar Empire.

Fans of X-Men will know that the mutant team had a confrontation with the Shi’ar Empire. The X-Men wants to protect Jean Grey, who is now the Phoenix. But how can they protect her when she’s a powerful being who can upset the galaxy?

With Lilandra making an appearance, does this mean that the X-Men movie universe is opening up for space adventures? Or will the story still be focused on Earth with the Shi’ar visiting? Perhaps Marvel Studios doing Guardians of the Galaxy will make Fox comfortable with taking the series to space. In any case, I do wish to see some kind of spark going on between Charles and Lilandra since they do become an item later on. In addition, we can already see Chastain and McAvoy being playful in the Instagram photo below.

Simon Kinberg and X-Men

Simon Kinberg is directing and writing the film, and this will mark his directorial debut. What’s interesting to note is that he is taking another crack at the Dark Phoenix storyline. He did, after all, co-wrote X-Men: The Last Stand, which didn’t fare well with critics. With X-Men: Dark Phoenix, it’s looking like he’s trying to stay faithful to the arc written by Chris Claremont.

The film also stars Michael Fassbender as Magneto, Jennifer Lawrence as Mystique, Nicholas Hoult as Beast, Tye Sheridan as Cyclops, Sophie Turner as Jean Grey/Dark Phoenix, Alexandra Shipp as Storm, Kodi Smit-McPhee as Nightcrawler, and Evan Peters as Quicksilver.

X-Men: Dark Phoenix hits theaters on November 2, 2018.
