First ‘Captain Marvel’ details emerge from Comic-Con

Captain Marvel - All New Marvel Now! #1

Despite being on the same panel as other Marvel Studios blockbusters, Captain Marvel had one of the biggest bombshells that day. Following the Ant-Man and the Wasp, Kevin Feige revealed some juicy details about Captain Marvel. Even though everyone expected a space setting, no one expected that it would take place in the 90s. Yes, the 90s are now considered a period piece. Unfortunately, this means that it’s going to be a while before we see Carol in a present day setting. Especially since Joe Russo confirmed that she won’t appear Avengers: Infinity War as well.

Afterward, Kevin Feige revealed concept art of Brie Larson in her full Captain Marvel suit. As you can see below, the suit resembles the modern “All-New, All-Different” costume from Michele Fazekas and Tara Butters’ “Captain Marvel” run.

Captain Marvel - Costume Reveal (SDCC 2017)

If the costume reveal wasn’t enough, the night’s biggest reveal came right after. Feige revealed that the shape-shifting Skrulls would be making their Marvel Cinematic Universe debut in Captain Marvel. This means that Captain Marvel will be adapting the Kree/Skrull war for the big screen. “There’s an entire section of our comics that deal with the Kree/Skrull war,” Kevin Feige told IGN. “We haven’t tapped into that at all. We thought that would be an amazing huge portion of mythology [that] belongs to Captain Marvel.”

Though the Skrulls share a deep connection with the Fantastic Four, the Skrulls themselves are shared by Marvel Studios and Fox. It’s similar to the joint custody between Scarlet Witch and Quicksilver. However, don’t expect to see any form of the Super Skrulls in the film.

Feige also confirmed that Samuel L. Jackson would be reprising his role as Nick Fury in the film. Only this time, he’ll have both of his eyes. This is significant because that would mean that the Skrulls have been in the MCU for a while now. In Captain America: The Winter Soldier, Nick Fury tells Cap that “the last time I trusted someone, I lost an eye.” That line seems like a throwaway at the time, but now, it seems to be very important. This could very well mean that the Skrull invasion has been happening since Phase 2. Marvel Studios really does think ahead, don’t they?
