Fun offsite activities to do at San Diego Comic-Con 2017

If you’re visiting San Diego Comic-Con, there are many “activations” and booths around the San Diego Convention Center. These are great when you don’t feel like going inside the really packed convention center. Most of the activations don’t require a Comic-Con badge, so that should be great news for those who can’t get one and still want to experience the world of San Diego Comic-Con… without actually going inside the convention center. We had the chance to check them out, and here’s a few we recommend.

Schick Hydro Escape Room

Yes, you’ll get the chance to try out an escape room at the Interactive Zone in Petco Park. Participants will have 15 minutes to solve mental and physical puzzles. And in the end, they’ll need to activate the Schick Hydro superhero Hydrobot. The experience will test your noggin and your teamwork skills as you are transported into Dr. Hiroshi Benson’s work space.

If the heat is getting to you, you can rest up at the Schick Hydro Lounge and get a professional barber shave and swag.

To enter the Schick Hydro Escape, sign up for the experience at the Interactive Zone in Petco Park from Thursday, July 20 to Sunday 23 from 9 a.m. – 5 p.m. PST.

Oh, and if you want a chance for VIP access, simply follow @SchickHydro and find out ways to use them using #HydroEscape and The Daily Cosplay Cut.

NBC’s Midnight, Texas Immersive Experience

NBC is promoting a new supernatural show, “Midnight, Texas,” and its activation is one of the most immersive experiences available during San Diego Comic-Con 2017. Located at the Gaslamp Square, you’ll learn about the show as it comes to life via multiple rooms filled with live actors, holograms, and 4D wonder. Each room is unique and they include a Pawn Shop, Fiji’s house, Tattoo Parlor, Olivia’s Armory, and a pet cemetery.

LAIKA Experience

Fans of LAIKA films should definitely check out the LAIKA experience located at 520 5th avenue. The company is offering an estimated 20-minute tour as guests go through different rooms, each showcasing actual puppets, sets, monsters and props from its films.

The exhibit starts with LAIKA’s first film, Coraline, and then leads to other rooms for ParaNorman, The Boxtrolls, and Kubo and the Two Strings. Learn about the technology and innovations that go behind the films including how animators use 3D printing to animate the puppets.

Here are the special San Diego Comic-Con hours:

  • Friday, July 21: 11:00 AM to 11:00 PM
  • Saturday, July 22: 11:00 AM to 11:00 PM
  • Sunday, July 23: 10:00 AM-6:00 PM

Game of Thrones: Winter Is Here Experience

HBO’s Game of Thrones Experience always has a HUGE line, so if you want a chance to experience winter, you should come early. The exhibit is done differently this year, as guests will be going from one booth to another, participating in a scene from Game of Thrones, sit on the Dragonstone throne and the Iron Throne, pose in a bullet-time video as guests wield a sword, and more. Fans will also get a cool swag bag including an exclusive Night King pop, t-shirt, and poster.

RECOIL – FPS in Real Life

If you want to participate in a real life battlefield, check out RECOIL. The live-action game is a combination of an FPS shooter and laser tag. You’re equipped with a gun, smartphone that directs you to ammo and respawn points, and headphones for total immersion. How fun can an enhanced version of laser tag be? Really, really fun!

By wearing headphones, you’ll hear special effects like projectiles flying by you, and signals for when you need ammo or are dying. At the center of it all is the RECOIL router that acts as a hub for all the players and their guns. Your gun has a limit on ammo clips, so if they run out, you’ll need to reload. If you run out of ammo completely, you’ll need to make a dash for the ammo station.

San Diego Comic-Con is a very fun place to be, whether you have a badge or not. Most of my experiences during the event takes place near the Gaslamp District, so if you miss the chance to get a badge, know that there are always cool activities all over downtown San Diego.
