Senran Kagura: Peach Beach Splash is your next guilty pleasure

Senran Kagura: Peach Beach SplashThe ninja girls of Senran Kagura are back, and this time they brought their swim gear with them in Senran Kagura: Peach Beach Splash! This new installment is an online third-person shooter (or third-person splasher) where the girls take up arms in the form of water guns and hydro-jetpacks.

Each team is made up of five players, able to choose between 30 different characters. They all play the same at first, but it’s when you add card combinations that they begin to have unique abilities. Players can choose a set of 6 skill cards and 3 pet summon cards. Even though this is an online shooter, it helps that you can play as bots, which I did on the show floor. Since shooter games are not a popular genre in Japan, the designers put in a lock-on aim assist feature in ensuring players get an easier time trying to aim.

While I was playing the game, I never felt a sense of competitive anxiety I get while playing most shooters. Instead, the feeling I received was a joking playfulness I get when I invite some friends over to watch a ridiculous movie or play a ridiculous game. This is what Senran Kagura: Peach Beach Splash seems to be going for. Other than the obvious hook of buxom anime girls shooting at each other with water guns, when an opposing player is down, you can shoot them while they’re down for a fatal finisher. Only it isn’t as much of a finisher as you’re blatantly shooting off the girls’ bikinis for a lewd in-game cinematic. Unfortunately for you pervs, they use sparkling lights to censor some unmentionables.

Senran Kagura: Peach Beach Splash releases this fall on PS4. If you’re a big fan of the series, you may be interested in the “No Shirt, No Shoes, All Service Edition.” It comes with a Blu-ray containing openings from previous Senran Kagura games along with an art book of the girls’ summer adventures, a soundtrack CD, and some DLC bonuses like new colorful bikinis, the Futomaki Roll Bazooka special weapon, a Bebeby pet card, a special set of skill cards, and the soaking Wet High School Uniform costume.

l love to play games and write stuff about them. I can't play something and not tell anyone how I feel about it. Call it a sickness, because it is.
