Lucy Liu to direct Marvel’s Luke Cage season premiere

Lucy Liu is entering the Marvel world, but no, not as a superhero character. Liu has been announced as the director for the season two premiere episode of Marvel’s Luke Cage on Netflix.

“What a thrill to collaborate with Marvel and Netflix, two industry titans, who paint our world with inspiring stories and beguiling characters,” Liu said in a statement to Marvel. “It is such an honor to work with such a passionate and fearless team.”

Luke Cage showrunner Cheo Hodari Coker said of Liu, “Lucy and I have been tight since our ‘SouthLAnd’ days and she’s a welcome addition to our Luke Cage family. She brings the same buoyant intensity, deft humor, and singular focus to her directing that she has always brought to her acting….not to mention the fact that the former ‘O’Ren Ishii’ certainly knows her way around an action sequence. Her enthusiasm is infectious.”

This isn’t Liu’s first time in the director’s chair. Liu made her directorial debut in 2011 on the short film Meena and has directed a few episodes of Elementary, which she also stars in.

“When you’re dealing with a bulletproof man, it helps if you have a bulletproof director,” said Jeph Loeb, executive producer for Luke Cage of Liu. “Lucy brings a keen eye, a superb sense of story, and an obvious love of actors. She is rocking Luke Cage 2.”

There were rumors of Liu’s involvement in the series when she was spotted on the set of Luke Cage last month.

Adding to the Luke Cage news, two new faces have been added to the cast – Mustafa Shakir (seen in The Deuce and The Night Of) and Gabrielle Dennis (InsecureRosewood). Marvel revealed Shakir will play John McIver aka Bushmaster, “a natural leader, brimming with charisma, whose mission is focused on Harlem and vengeance.” Dennis will play Tilda Johnson aka Nightshade, “a brilliant, holistic doctor with a complicated history in Harlem where, as much as she tries to stay far from trouble, it seems to always find her.”

Marvel’s Luke Cage is currently filming and will be released sometime in 2018.
