Battle Chasers: Nightwar RPG has us intrigued at E3, plus you can fish!

Battle Chasers: Nightwar is an upcoming turn-based RPG from developer Airship Syndicate and publisher THQ Nordic. It features returning characters from the world of Battle Chasers, beautiful environments, JRPG-inspired combat and 2D-animated cutscenes. We were shown a preview build, and it has gotten us excited for what’s to come of the dungeon crawler.

Earlier this year it was announced that Battle Chasers: Nightwar would be released for the Nintendo Switch via a reveal trailer. Furthermore, the video shows off the combat, exploration, and bits of the 2D-animated scenes. One of the highlights in the trailer is the game’s score, and it’s sounding rich and somber. Fans of ’90s comics may know of a fantasy series called Battle Chasers by Joe Madureira. The series only had nine issues, and fans would have to wait 16 years later for the return of Battle Chasers, only this time as a video game. Madureira and Airship Syndicate successfully funded the game via Kickstarter, and it’s headed to all the current major consoles.

Returning Battle Chasers Characters

The Battle Chasers characters are back including the swordsman Garrison, nine-year-old Gully, Calibretto the golem, wizard Knolan and bounty hunter Red Monika. In addition, Alumon will be a new character for the game. Players will be able to choose between three characters, with more choices once they progress in the game.

Players can swap between heroes at any time, with each having two dungeon abilities. (The second ability unlocks at level 10.) Garrison can avoid trap damage by dashing or get past an enemy if players don’t feel like fighting. Gully can stun nearby enemies. Calibretto has the ability to heal the group. Moreover, Monika has stealth and is able to pick pockets.

The main mode of traveling is through the overworld via a top-down view. It’s here where players will encounter enemies, friends, randomly generated dungeons, items, and fishing. Yes, you’ll be able to fish in the game!


Players will get to upgrade their fishing gear, whether they are the rods, reels or bait. These will help when trying to snag a tougher fish. To reel a fish in, simply pull in the opposite direction that it’s pulling. Additionally, the fishing journal helps to keep track of the fishes you caught, with each one caught giving you a reward.


Combat is inspired by classic JRPGs with turn-based battles. When performing instant attacks, players will build up temporary mana via the red overcharge bar. This encourages players to explore different abilities. In addition, there’s the burst meter that fills whether you’re dealing or taking damage throughout combat that’s shared between the three heroes. There are three burst levels, with each showing off a cool cinematic sequence.

In the latest build that we saw, we get to see more of the lore that enhances the story. These are optional, and collecting them will give you skill points.

So far the RPG is shaping up nicely with new features still being added. Players are in for a treat with strategic combat, challenging enemies, and dark dungeons.

Also, if you’re wondering about the new Battle Chasers comics issue 10 and on, those will come out after the game. However, there’s no concrete date for those yet.

Battle Chasers: Nightwar will be available for the PC, PlayStation 4, Xbox One and Nintendo Switch on October 3, 2017.
