Gina Prince-Bythewood to direct Black Cat and Silver Sable movie

Marvel Studios is constantly trying to get more obscure characters as well as female heroes into theaters to introduce them to a larger audience. Well, a new project–not called Captain Marvel–aims to do just that. Gina Prince-Bythewood has been recruited to direct a Spider-Man offshoot movie featuring the characters Black Cat and Silver Sable, two lesser-known female characters in the Marvel universe.

Silver & Black, the aptly named upcoming film, will be quite the change for the 47-year-old writer-director. Her previous work includes her feature debut Love and Basketball for which she garnered much acclaim and several awards. She’s also worked on other small dramatic films like The Secret Life of Bees and the romantic drama Beyond the Lights. She didn’t work with superheroes or villains in those films but that will soon change with Silver & Black as well as the new TV series Cloak & Dagger whose pilot she’ll be directing.

This is one of the several Spider-Man related movies coming out in the near-future. Of course, Spider-Man: Homecoming, another reboot for the character, is right around the corner. As well, production on Venom is underway with the invaluable Tom Hardy in the lead role and Ruben Fleischer directing.

As for the leading ladies, Black Cat, who’s real name is Felicia Hardy, is an acrobatic cat burglar with a long and complicated history with Spider-Man. She was created by Marv Wolfman and Keith Pollard, appearing first in The Amazing Spider-Man #194 in 1979.

Silver Sable, on the other hand, was created by Tom DeFalco and Ron Frenz, debuting in The Amazing Spider-Man #265 in 1985. She’s a mercenary who runs a company that hunts war criminals. Like Black Cat, she’s been both friend and enemy of Spider-Man.

Comic book writer Chris Yost, who’s recently worked on Thor: Ragnarok, is writing the most recent draft of the script after Westworld‘s co-creator, Lisa Joy, did some work on it.

The Black Cat and Silver Sable movie will be produced by Matt Tolmach and Amy Pascal and will most likely start filming this fall.
