Universal announces new era of monster movies as ‘Dark Universe’

With only weeks separating us from the latest creature from Universal Pictures, The Mummy, stories have been brewing of what could be a possible future Monster-verse. Comprised of the classic monsters such as Wolfman, Frankenstein’s monster, and of course, Dracula, Universal has held a secret close to their hearts for some time. Now, the secret is revealed, and it could be one of the greatest things to happen to cinema!

Earlier today, Universal Pictures has announced that The Mummy will be the start of a relaunch of their classic monster movie characters in their Dark Universe franchise. Beauty and the Beast‘s Bill Condon is set to helm the next Dark Universe film, Bride of Frankenstein. The film is appropriately set for a release date of Valentine’s Day, February 14, 2019. The actress to play the titular role has yet to be announced.

Also, in an image released by Universal, announcing the incredible news that Javier Bardem will portray Frankenstein’s monster, and Johnny Depp will portray the Invisible Man. All these characters will be uniquely tied together through Crowe’s character Dr. Jekyll and his multi-national organzation, Prodigium.

“We take enormous pride in the creativity and passion that has inspired the reimagining of Universal’s iconic monsters and promise audiences we will expand this series strategically,” Universal Pictures Chairman Donna Langley said in a statement. “I’m very excited to bring a new Bride of Frankenstein to life on screen, particularly since James Whale’s original creation is still so potent,” stated director Condon. “The bride of Frankenstein remains the most iconic female monsters in film history, and that’s a testament to Whale’s masterpiece, which endures as one of the greatest movies ever made.”

Universal also released a video to cap all the news they’ve announced, wrapping it in a beautiful montage of clips from the classic films that built the franchise. Check out the clip below!
