What fans can expect from Netflix’s The Witcher series

The Witcher
Netflix is working on bringing the tale of Geralt of Rivia to life with The Witcher series. It’s based on the fantasy books by Andrzej Sapkowski about a monster hunter. It inspired the popular Witcher games by developer CD Projekt Red.

Sapkowski will be brought on board as the series’ creative consultant. “I’m thrilled that Netflix will be doing an adaptation of my stories,” he said in a press release, “staying true to the source material and the themes that I have spent over thirty years writing.”

Netflix will even bring in talent from The Witcher games like Tomas Baginski. He directed the intro videos for all the three Witcher games and the teaser trailer for Cyberpunk 2077. It’s revealed that he will be directing at least an episode per season.

Here’s the epic intro video from The Witcher 3: Wild Hunt featuring Geralt of Rivia and his love, Yennefer.

There are many questions, like which of the stories will Netflix adapt. Although it’s not much, Executive Producers Sean Daniel and Jason Brown (“The Expanse”) have this to say:

“The Witcher stories follow an unconventional family that comes together to fight for truth in a dangerous world. The characters are original, funny and constantly surprising and we can’t wait to bring them to life at Netflix, the perfect home for innovative storytelling.”

Will Fans Get To See Characters like Yennefer and Ciri?

Maybe fans will get to see Geralt and Yennefer going on adventures together as they raise Ciri. Furthermore, will they get to see other characters like Triss Merigold or his best friend, Dandelion?

Executive producers Baginski and Jarek Sawko had more to say about how the show will feature the book’s deeper themes:

“There is a moral and intellectual depth in these books which goes beyond genre. It is a story about today and today’s challenges, hidden under a fantasy cover. It is a story about us, about the monster and the hero inside all of our hearts.”

Sapkowski is a Polish author, so it seems fitting that Platige Image, a Polish studio, is working on production and visual effects.

Information is still scarce since there isn’t any news on who’s playing what character and director choices. The show will definitely benefit from fresh actors, but if I had to choose someone for Geralt, it would have to be Zach McGowan (“Black Sails”) with Kate Beckinsale or Eva Green as Yennefer.

The Witcher books follow Geralt of Rivia and his adventures. He’s a witcher, a monster hunter with special training at an early age and special abilities, thanks to a mutation process. Because he’s a witcher, he can sometimes be mistreated by others. He’s accompanied by the sorceress Yennefer, his “soul mate.”
