Unbreakable Kimmy Schmidt season 3 trailer arrives

Many already know of my absolute infatuation with Netflix’s superlative comedy, Unbreakable Kimmy Schmidt. Since its debut 2 years ago, the show has proven itself to be among the most clever, yet persistently optimistic comedies on any medium. Call it the Yin to Louie C.K.’s morose (but still hilarious) Yang. Buoyed by the ample charms of breakout star Ellie Kemper as well as a stupendous supporting cast, the show has taken what could have been a dark subject (doomsday cult survivors) and turned it into one of the most earnest and heartfelt shows on TV. Netflix has just released the trailer for Unbreakable Kimmy Schmidt season 3.

Its rapid fire jokes make it the spiritual successor to Tina Fey and Robert Carlock’s previous brainchild, 30 Rock. But its warm disposition gives it the heart of Parks and Recreation. So with the drop of the new season 3 trailer, let’s talk about some of the highlights that we expect to see from the upcoming season.

  • Kimmy goes to college – A natural extension of the show, given the character’s last interaction with the real world, prior to being entrapped in an underground bunker at age 14, she’s now ready to face college with what appears to be longtime frenemy, Xanthippe.
  • Titus goes “full lemonade” on Mike – Leave it to Titus (Tituss Burgess) to crank the drama to 11, as he tries to salvage(?) his relationship with Mike by smashing his car windows.
  • Lilian’s heart is broken – Lilian (Carol Kane) breaks up with Bob Durst.
  • Special Guest Stars – Jon Hamm returns as Kimmy’s ex-captor/husband Reverend Richard Wayne Gary Wayne, looking to get a divorce. There’s also a brief flash of Daveed Diggs (Hamilton) in an as yet unknown guest star role and Josh Charles as Duke, the brother of Jacqeline’s current boyfriend, Russ.

Even in the brief two-minute trailer, we are reminded about just how whip smart and laugh-out-loud funny this show is. And I can’t wait to experience another season of Kimmy’s glorious stories over the course of one bingeworthy weekend.

Unbreakable Kimmy Schmidt season 3 premieres on Netflix on May 19th.
