Kelly Marie Tran joins cast of Star Wars: The Last Jedi
Newcomer Kelly Marie Tran is introduced in Star Wars: The Last Jedi
An important casting decision revealed itself amid the hype that was the new trailer for The Last Jedi. In a “Star Wars Celebration” panel on Friday in Orlando, Florida, writer-director Rian Johnson (Brick, Looper) revealed a new character into the Star Wars universe: Rose, played by Kelly Marie Tran.
Rose is revealed to be a maintenance worker who is also a member of the Resistance. Though details are of course still rather sparse.
Johnson said this new character:
“This possibility that any of us could step up and become a hero, that’s where Rose comes from,” Johnson tells the crowd, saying Luke Skywalker and Rey are cut from similar cloth — nobodies from nowhere who became vital parts of galactic history. “She’s not a soldier, she’s not looking to be a hero. But she gets pulled into a very big adventure with Finn.”
Kelly Marie Tran has almost no big screen credits to her name and is probably best known for her video shorts on College Humor and guest starring stints on TV shows such as About a Boy. That is all about to change in a pretty big way.
There is still a lot of mystery surrounding the movie, but we do know that Mark Hamill’s Luke Skywalker is not the same since the events of the original trilogy.
Star Wars: The Last Jedi hits theaters on December 15, 2017.
