Crazy Rich Asians movie adds Sonoya Mizuno to cast
Another Joins the Cast of Crazy Rich Asians
Crazy Rich Asians, John M. Chu’s film based on Kevin Kwan’s international bestseller, has been filling up its cast. These include a veritable bounty of strong Asian roles. In addition to Constance Wu (Fresh Off the Boat), Michelle Yeoh, Gemma Chan, and Henry Golding, the film has just announced another new addition to the cast in the form of Sonoya Mizuno. Mizuno is probably best known for her role as the silent robot companion/dancer in Ex Machina. She also appeared in small roles in La La Land and Beauty and the Beast.
As a fan of the book, I’ve been heartened to see so many Asians getting potentially star-making roles. The book is soapy, fun and is about Asian high (and low) culture and the excesses that come from new money in Asia. And with all due respect to one of my favorite actresses in the Avengers, let’s just avoid casting Scarlett Johannson, please.
Book synopsis: When Rachel Chu agrees to spend the summer in Singapore with her boyfriend, Nicholas Young, she envisions a humble family home, long drives to explore the island, and quality time with the man she might one day marry. What she doesn’t know is that Nick’s family home happens to look like a palace, that she’ll ride in more private planes than cars, and that with one of Asia’s most eligible bachelors on her arm, Rachel might as well have a target on her back.
