Warner Bros pursuing Jordan Peele to direct ‘Akira’

Akira - Kaneda Key Art #1

Jordan Peele may jump from horror to sci-fi with Akira.

Hot off of the success of Get Out, Warner Bros is now looking to Jordan Peele to direct Akira. At this stage, Warner Bros are aggressively trying to pursue Peele to direct Akira. If Jordan Peele decides to pick Akira as his next project then it’s his. No pitch is necessary here.

The live-action adaptation has been stuck in development hell for many years. A few years ago, Jaume Collet-Serra was hired to direct the film starring Garrett Hedlund and Kristin Stewart as Kaneda and Kei, respectively. The casting controversy was so loud that Warner Bros would eventually pull the project. Now, rumors recently started swirling that David F. Sandberg and Daniel Espinosa was being sought by Warner to direct the film. But that’s all it was is rumors. Sandberg would eventually join DC’s Shazam adaptation and Espinosa’s Life is underperforming at the box office.

Jordan Peele is an interesting choice. After the uproar over Ghost in the Shell, Warner Bros is privy to the racial sensitivity of Akira. Hiring Jordan Peele could be a perfect coup for the project because of his work on Get Out. There were a lot of racial themes in the film and that kind of social commentary could help ease the project into development.

There is the other side to this story. Jordan Peele may decide to stick with horror films and not take on such a big project. However, those within the industry feel as if Peele is ready to make the jump to big-budget tentpoles.

So what do you think of the possibility of Jordan Peele directing Akira? Sound off with your thoughts in the comments section below!
