Disney looking to Jared Leto to star in ‘Tron’ reboot

Just when you think a program has died, you realize it’s not really dead. It just gets upgraded. Disney is in the very early stages of development in a Tron movie and they’re looking to Jared Leto to star in the film. Keep in mind that these are the very early stages of development so a director and screenwriter has not been hired yet.

However, Justin Springer (Tron: LegacyOblivion) is returning to produce the new Tron movie. Should Jared Leto agree to join the movie then he will also produce the film in some capacity with his producing partner Emma Ludbrook.

Sadly, the new Tron won’t be a direct sequel to Legacy and is being built out of the bones of the deleted Tron: Ascension script. Leto would be playing a character named Ares, who hasn’t appeared in any of the other Tron films and animated series but he was a key player in that script.

This isn’t the first time Jared Leto name was mentioned together with Tron. Back when Tron: Ascension was still in development, Disney wanted to add Jared Leto to the cast but an offer and negotiations never commenced. The role Disney wanted Leto to originally play could be the Ares character from the original Ascension script.

It’s been a VERY long and sad journey for Tron 3. It’s been a series of shutdowns and restarts for a sequel and just as it seemed it was heading towards pre-production, the studio pulled the plug for good in 2015.

Our hope is that the next Tron would actually feature Tron as the main character and include the visuals and music of Daft Punk again.

What do you think of Jared Leto potentially joining Tron? Sound off with your thoughts in the comments section below!
