Joe Carnahan to direct ‘The Raid’ reimagining starring Frank Grillo

The Raid is hands-down one of my all-time favorite action flicks, joining the pantheon of Aliens, The Matrix, Ong Bak, Supercop, Terminator 2: Judgement Day, and others. But when a foreign action film is as buzzy and successful as The Raid was, Hollywood is not that far behind. Over the years there have been several hiccups that prevented a Hollywood remake from happening.

After seemingly being dormant for a few years, director Joe Carnahan (the upcoming Bad Boys for Life/Bad Boys III) and Frank Grillo (Captain America: The Winter Soldier) will be remaking reimagining the film for Hollywood.

The Raid original production company, XYZ Films, dropped the big announcement on Twitter:

In the video, Joe Carnahan and Frank Grillo gave us a little taste of the ideas that he’s come up with for the reimagining. For one thing, the film will be set in Caracas, Venezuela (named 2015’s most murderous city), the team will feature “6 or 7 guys” instead of the police squad/army in the original, and will feature “fighting that no one has ever seen.”

Now remaking or reimagining a classic is a difficult concept to bare for fans of the original. So to clarify what he intends to do with The Raid, Carnahan took to Twitter to try and quell fans’ concerns.

As a fan of the original, I’ll try to keep an open mind as to what Joe Carnahan and Frank Grillo has in store for us. After all, there have been plenty of fantastic remakes/reimaginings over the years like Ocean’s 11ScarfaceThe FlyThe DepartedThe Magnificent SevenThe Ring, just to name a few. Hopefully, Carnahan will deliver on his statement on delivering something really special.
