Mads Mikkelsen shares excitement about working with Hideo Kojima on Death Stranding

During The Game Awards 2016, Hideo Kojima debuted another trailer for his upcoming game, Death Stranding, starring Norman Reedus. It was cryptic and weird as usual, and viewers got to see an appearance from movie director Guillermo del Toro. At the end of the trailer, it was revealed that actor Mads Mikkelsen (Hannibal, Doctor Strange, Rogue One: A Star Wars Story) was going to be in the game.

During a Rogue One junket over the weekend, Birth.Movies.Death had a great interview with Mikkelsen, and they touched on the upcoming game.

“It’s very intricate. I mean, you know (Kojima). He’s a very brilliant man. I mean … the stuff he told me? I only understood some of it,” Mikkelsen said when asked about the plot.

The actor said that he wasn’t a gamer and continued, “But then people told me and showed me things, and I was like, ‘Oh, yeah, I’ve seen that before.’ And when I told my son he was like, ‘What?!’ (laughs)”

“But I also saw the trailer he had done with Norman Reedus, and I thought that was spectacular just from the standpoint of an actor,” he added. “The emotion, the feeling of it, the sensuality in what he does. Without even being a gamer, I was like, this is crazy, what he’s doing. I loved it.”

“Well, in a way, he is making films,” the actor said about Kojima and filmmaking. “He’s creating his own worlds.”

Mikkelsen then talked about the motion capture process with the different movies and of course, Death Stranding.

“Well, I did some motion-capture on Rogue One, and some on Doctor Strange,” he said. “There were certain things that we had to use that for, that had to be replaced. I mean, you can do a lot stunts, you know? We can fall from four floors. But we can’t do it for one hundred floors. So for that, we did some motion-capture. For those last ninety-six floors (laughs).”
