Gamers undoubtedly remain excited over the upcoming release of The Legend of Zelda: Breath of the Wild on the Wii U and Nintendo Switch next year. The question is, which month in 2017 will the game come out?

Unfortunately for fans hoping a March release was in store alongside the new Switch console, several outlets are reporting a delay until June for the highly anticipated title. Writers are referencing a Target advertisement which gives away the official release date as June 13. However, a click on the link will reveal the date is missing.

Yet, IGN and other websites displayed a screenshot showing “June 13” under “shipping” on the right side.

To make matters more complicated, Amazon lists the release date as March 31st, a date which more gamers expected because of the Switch launch. After the previous delays, Zelda fans were not expecting to wait any longer.

Also, a Twitter search reveals one post stating, “GameStop’s latest earnings report suggests Zelda: Breath of the Wild could release in the first quarter of 2017 (January-March).”

It is not clear what is going on, but one theory says Nintendo will hold back the Wii U version, either for more development time or to prevent overshadowing the Switch release of the same title. Remember, back in 2006, Nintendo pushed back the Gamecube version of Twilight Princess in order to not interfere with the Wii launch.

So, there is historical precedence for delaying the same Zelda game coming out for two different consoles.

Still, would the delay mean waiting over two months after the Switch version?

Nintendo may also just need more time to make Breath of the Wild better. Some developers rush their games to meet Christmas deadlines or for other reasons, and suffer the consequences of possible bugs and other problems.

If there is one company likely to take their time, no matter who complains about delays, it is Nintendo. The company strives for perfection.

Fans will have to wait and see whether The Legend of Zelda: Breath of the Wild comes out in March or June. If it goes past June though, do not be surprised to see gamers with pitchforks standing outside Nintendo headquarters.
