SDCC 2016: ‘Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 2’ Hall H clip recap
During this year’s Marvel Studios panel at Hall H, a group of unruly Ravagers took over the Hall for their own personal use. Much to the “dismay” of director James Gunn and Kevin Feige, Gunn did his best to control the situation before introducing the main cast of Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 2. Chris Pratt, Zoe Saldana, Dave Bautista, Karen Gillan, Pom Klementieff, Elizabeth Debicki, and Kurt Russell were all hilariously heckled by the Ravagers before Gunn told the crowd that he has an unfinished clip that shows what the Ravagers deserve.
The clip opens with Taserface (Chris Sullivan) and two Ravagers locking up Yondu (Michael Rooker) and Rocket (Bradley Cooper) in a prison cell. “We deliver you to the Kree in the morning,” Taserface tells Yondu and Rocket. As the prison cell closes, Taserface says “I doubt anyone of you will last much longer after that.”
A Ravager who’s carrying little Baby Groot (Vin Diesel) says, “hey, what about this little plant? Can I smash him with a rock?”
“No!” Taserface says. “He’s too adorable to kill.”
“Can I at least poke its little eyes out?” The Ravager replies. Little Baby Groot is subjected to a cockfight of sorts with the Ravagers screaming at Baby Groot. Baby Groot looks frightened at what he’s being subjected too – with large anime style eyes and everything.
“Hey kid, come here,” Yondu says towards Baby Groot. “Hey, you wanna help us get out of here? There’s something I need you to get. In the Captain’s quarters, there’s a prototype fin. That thing I wore on my head?”
“It’s in a drawer next to the bunk, it’s in that, it’s red,” as Baby Groot silently sneaks into the Captain’s quarters where plenty of Ravagers are around sleeping. Unfortunately, Baby Groot grabbed the wrong item. “That’s my underwear,” Yondu says. “You have to be specific on what you’re talking about.” Rocket says.
“It’s a pro-to-type fin,” Yondu tells Baby Groot. Baby Groot hands Yondu a severed human toe. “What is it with you guys that there’s seriously somewhere with a bunch of severed human toes…” Rocket said. Baby Groot comes back with a familiar cybernetic eye. “That’s (Ravager’s name) eye, he takes it out when he sleeps. Go. Go get it.”
“But leave the eye here,” Rocket says. “What?” Yondu replies. “He’s going to wake up tomorrow and he’s not going to know where his eye is!” Rocket replied while laughing.
We see Baby Groot drag a desk towards the cell. “That’s a desk,” Yondu tells Baby Groot. “The (item) is this big,” Rocket said as he gives a visual description with his hands. “You explain it this time,” Yondu tells Rocket. “Okay…” Rocket replies.
Success! Baby Groot finally gives Yondu the prototype fin (see above). Jay & The Americans’ “Come A Little Bit Closer” begins to play as Yondu and Rocket escape from their cell and use the Yaka Arrow to take out two guards. Yondu walks past the guards and Rocket picks up a really big gun that one of the guards was carrying. As Taserface realizes that the fin is gone he yells out through the loudspeaker, “he’s got it! Yondu’s got the fin!” Yondu, Rocket, and Baby Groot (riding Yondu’s shoulders) starts walking down the hallway of the Eclector similar to the image below.
A lot of Ravagers begin to fill a large area with a lot of catwalks. It’s no problem for Yondu though because he just uses his Yaka Arrow to kill all of the Ravagers in the room. We get a shot of Yondu, Rocket, and Baby Groot’s back as they walk down a catwalk with plenty of dead Ravagers raining down from above. Little Baby Groot sees the Ravager who wanted to hit him with a rock up above and the little guy chases after him. He uses his expanding roots to get to the catwalk above and the Ravager tries to run away. Baby Groot uses his roots to trip him and throw him off the catwalk. Baby Groot drops down atop Yondu’s shoulder as the clip end.
Overall, the Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 2 clip has the same fun vibe that made the first one so great. The musical choice hilariously fit the scene involved too. It looks as if we have another hit record on our hands if the song choice for this clip is any indication. Also, if you thought Groot was adorable before then wait until you see Baby Groot on screen. He has a type of “cuteness overload” that will melt any ice cold hearts.
