Jason will have a new beginning in ‘Friday the 13th’ reboot

The producer behind many of the horror reboots in the last 13 years, such as 2003’s The Texas Chainsaw Massacre, 2005’s The Amityville Horror, 2010’s A Nightmare on Elm Street, and many others, has revealed plans for a big change with one of his reboots! In an interview with The Reel Word, Brad Fuller has revealed that he plans to re-define the Terror of Camp Crystal Lake, Jason Vorhees, in a sequel to his 2009 reboot, Friday the 13th. Fuller states that the screenplay created by writer Aaron Guzikowski, who penned the script for films such as Prisoners and Contraband, brings a unique perspective to Jason.

“Aaron’s story has great characters…You kind of have to understand Jason Voorhees, so we go back and we kind of started over and work our way forward,” said Fuller. When Fuller was asked as to whether this would be an origin story, he merely stated that it will be “Origin-ish, but it’s an origin that no one has seen before. Obviously Pamela’s there, but it’s a little bit different from what you’ve seen before.”

Pamela, of course, refers to Pamela Vorhees, the mother of Jason. Her unique part in Jason’s origin story is pretty substantial, and any part of his new origin delineating from that storyline may result in a huge mess. There’s not much you can do as far as backstory with a character so ingrained in the Horror genre, that it is associated with a mere sound effect: chi, chi, chi…ha, ha, ha.

Who knows if the story will veer too far off course, but honestly, the biggest thing that most directors and filmmakers tend to do is build so far from the source materials, that it doesn’t even make sense in calling the film by the same name. I guess we’ll just see what happens as time goes on, and we hear more about the film. Take a look at the interview in its entirety and you be the judge:

Friday the 13th is set for release on January 13, 2017.
