Warcraft isn’t all about WoW

With Warcraft coming out, I’m pretty damn pumped. Okay, I’m more than that, but you just can’t see it. [dances around]

Since the announcement of the film, I’ve been anticipating Warcraft ever since. Being a huge fan of World of Warcraft as many others, I would assume something like this is exactly what we’ve all been waiting for. However, since Warcraft is finally being released June 10th, I think it’s time I finally talk about why you need to not watch this movie expecting it to be anything like World of Warcraft.

Now, since most of the people going to see it are WoW fans, I’ve seen so many posts floating around the interwebs joking about the movie lagging, or how it may or may not be good depending on the story, and you know – all that fun stuff. And trust me! The jokes are pretty funny, don’t get me wrong, but I think we’re thinking about this movie the wrong way, which in return, can ruin our expectations of the film.

So allow me to clarify if you don’t already know, Warcraft in itself doesn’t really have anything to do with World of Warcraft. (Whhhaaaattt?!) It’s loosely based on the RTS game, Warcraft: Orcs & Humans.

First off and foremost, for those who have yet to discover this, Warcraft is and always has been the prequel to anything World of Warcraft related. Before goblins, blood elves, night elves, and various other contributing races you can play as in the MMO, there were just humans and orcs. That’s it, plain and simple.

Warcraft Movie

Let me break it down for ya in the easiest way possible without spoilers.

Sargeras is basically the baddest guy around. He is basically the Warcraft version of Lucifer. He wants all life to vanish from Azeroth. To do just that, he possesses a human sorcerer named Medivh. Upon doing so, he made him contact Gul’dan, an orc warlock, who resides on Draenor.

At the same time, The Burning Legion were corrupting the orc race in a very general sense, making them more aggressive and forming a big army. They later invade Azeroth through the dark portal, which was created by Medivh and Gul’dan. The army fought with the humans of Stormwind. That’s how the orcs first invaded Azeroth and is the initial premise of the movie.

With that being said, this means that there is nothing more than that. It’s how everything came about, and how the two worlds collided, creating both the Horde and Alliance. And I can see how obviously that relates to World of Warcraft, but Warcraft happens way before anything in the game actually takes place. Like, way, way before the game itself takes place. There is an immense amount of books and other events big and small that all occur before establishing any of the World of Warcraft games. In fact, there are so many things and stories, I didn’t even want to make a timeline or give you a rough estimate in total because there’s just that many.

So, while in a sense they are related (because I understand that they are), they do not necessarily correlate. Warcraft serves as the mega prequel to the entire universe.

This may seem obvious to some of you, especially those who are huge fans and what not. However, for those who are going into the movie thinking that Warcraft is going to have anything immensely related to WoW, please don’t.

Rid yourself of foul expectations, and break the bond you have between the movie and the game! Go into it and do yourself and I a favor, watch the film as it is, and don’t compare it to anything else. For it is not for that, but rather to allow fans like us to enjoy the origin and early birth of such an iconic game. Not bring the two together.

Are you just excited as I am? Check out the trailer!
