Gearbox Software confirms next Borderlands title

Speaking at a PAX East panel, Gearbox Software has confirmed that it will begin production on the next entry in its widely popular Borderlands game series.

“It’s no secret, obviously there’s going to be another Borderlands,” said Gearbox CEO Randy Pitchford before adding, “Ee don’t even know if we’re going to call it that (Borderlands 3). We could call it Borderlands 4 for all we know.” This could be due to the fact that Borderlands: The Pre-sequel, produced by 2K Australia, was the third release in the series.

During the panel, it was revealed that Battleborn’s art director Scott Kester will be working on the project, and creative boss Mikey Neumann will be writing the game.

Neumann also voiced fan-favorite character Scooter in Borderlands 2 and said during the panel that he had come up with ideas for a new character that would be Scooter’s son, Scooper.

“I did this whole Scooter thing, then I pitch-shifted it up like seven semitones so it sounds like a chipmunk and it was the funniest thing I’d ever heard,” Neumann said.

The character is in no way official, but the team doesn’t seem to have lost its fun and quirky approach to creating a Borderlands game.

Other details on the game, such as platforms or release dates, have not been confirmed as of yet, but Randy Pitchford did say that the team will begin work on the new Borderlands after the production of Battleborn and its DLC has been completed.

Battleborn will contain many references to Borderlands title in the main game and its DLC, but Pitchford also entertained the idea of teasing Borderlands 3 (or 4) in the game’s Easter eggs.

“There’s already a lot of Borderlands Easter eggs in Battleborn, but they’re all from previous Borderlands games. So what is we put Easter eggs for future stuff in the DLC?”

This could be a way of whetting appetites for what is to come next from Gearbox.

Right now, Gearbox’s focus is undoubtedly on Battleborn and its future plans for that title. But many fans of Borderlands will be glad to know that there is definitely going to be another entry in the series.
