Fallout New Vegas: Choose your own adventure

Fallout New Vegas

If you are in your mid-to-late twenties or older, then you probably remember the “choose your own adventure” books you might have read as a kid. My favorites were always the Goosebumps ones. The premise is simple: the author writes several versions of the story and allows the reader to choose what to do at certain points. Although there are limited numbers of outcomes, there are a few different ways of getting to them and it gives the reader the feeling of being in the story. YouTube channel “Many A True Nerd” has taken this same idea and applied it to an interactive YouTube series where you choose your own adventure through Bethesda’s Fallout: New Vegas.

In the series, you are given simple choices as to how you want to proceed. Do you want to go left or right? Sneak around the raiders or attack? Each choice you make determines the path you take in the game. This includes which faction you side with. In playing through myself, I ended up siding with the Legion (unintentionally) though, got too cocky and ended up getting shot in Boulder. Of course it isn’t the same experience as you would get playing the game yourself since you do not get to choose everything. For example, in the little bit that I tried out, I was not able to pick my own weapons and in combat situations where I might have backed up and taken cover, the video has you go full force. However, this is an awesome idea and it would be cool to see other games be made into similar series.

The videos rely on the YouTube annotations to make your choices. These are only usable on a desktop or laptop so it is recommended that you use one of those devices if you plan on trying it out. However if you have no choice, then the creator has placed links in the description of each video that can be used to make the choices – though you may not get the same experience.
