Tomb Raider movie to be inspired by video game reboot’s story

With the Tomb Raider reboot movie finding its director and screenwriter, production is moving forward. What story will director Roar Uthaug tell? In an interview with IGN, he was asked if the movie will be inspired by Lara’s origin story in 2013’s Tomb Raider video game. He praised Crystal Dynamic’s focus on making her a relatable character.

“I think making Lara Croft feel like a real human being, that’s definitely something we want to bring to the big screen as well. I think we’ll want to make people relate to Lara as a character. I’m hoping to bring some of my Norwegian sensibilities to the franchise… I’ve always been a fan of strong female characters and I think I’ve had strong female characters in all my previous movies, so that’s something I thought was interesting.”

He talks about how he’s excited to work in this genre.

“Raiders of the Lost Ark was one of my favorite films growing up, so it’s definitely a dream to work in that kind of genre. I think we’ll want to make it feel like a modern action movie and to make what’s going on feel like it’s going on for real.”

Geneva Robertson-Dworet (Transformers 5) is writing the screenplay.

The film is based on the Tomb Raider franchise featuring Lara Croft. Crystal Dynamics rebooted the series in 2013 with success. The last two games have featured Lara’s rise to becoming a tomb raider, and this has helped make her become more relatable while giving us an emotional story.
