You may know Insomniac Games for their big hits such as Ratchet and Clank and even Spyro the Dragon, but their next Spring title, Song of the Deep, has been described as none other than a “passion project.” Speaking to Polygon, chief creative officer Brian Hastings aims to take players into a world with “a sense of amazement and awe.” Hastings also stated that his 10-year-old daughter was a huge inspiration behind the project. He wanted her to have a hero to look up to, “one who would inspire her through her courage, love and resourcefulness.”

Players take control of Merryn, daughter of a fisherman who went lost at sea. With the help of a submarine, scuba gear, and her own wit, she will go down in the depths to find him at any costs. Song of the Deep will play like a 2.5-D Metroidvania side-scroller with an art-style similar to that of a children’s book, which is also in the works. Over the course of the game, Merryn will acquire new abilities such as the scuba gear which will allow her to swim through tight spaces inaccessible to her submarine; and like any Metroidvania, puzzles will play a huge part in the game.

“We don’t want this to be just a world of beautiful background,” Hastings told Polygon. “We want it to be interactive, like a children’s science museum on an alien planet.” Most of the puzzles in Song of the Deep revolve around currents that may support or hold you back as you try and activate switches. Judging by the trailer, it looks as if changes in the environment will ensue as well.

With the small team of 15 having full creative control, this will also be the first game published by retailer GameStop. Even though Song of the Deep will be a downloadable title for PS4, Xbox One and PC, GameStop will sell a physical version exclusively in their stores. GameStop’s Mark Stanley aims to have the company’s 6,200 retail stores “try to get more and more gamers throughout the world to be able to discover this game” and “expand the IP beyond the game” by other means of merchandising.

l love to play games and write stuff about them. I can't play something and not tell anyone how I feel about it. Call it a sickness, because it is.
