Disney announced that it has pushed back the release date for Star Wars: Episode VIII from May 26, 2017 to December 15, 2017. The May 26th slot will now be filled by Pirates of the Caribbean: Dead Men Tell No Tales.

The original release date for Pirates of the Caribbean: Dead Men Tell No Tales was July 7, 2017.

So why was Star Wars: Episode VIII pushed back? It could be that Disney likes the December month for Star Wars films. Star Wars: The Force Awakens was released in December of 2015, with the upcoming Rogue One: A Star Wars Story hitting theaters in December of 2016.

As for the Pirates of the Caribbean films, On Stranger Tides was released in May of 2011, and perhaps Disney wanted to stick to the month of May for Pirates of the Caribbean: Dead Men Tell No Tales. Plus, the upcoming film is currently in post-production, so it can afford to be moved up early.

However, it looks like Disney may be teaming with Sony to embrace the new release date for the Marvel/Sony Spider-Man reboot, giving the other films new release dates.

• Pirates of the Caribbean: Dead Men Tell No Tales will be released on May 26, 2017 (original release date: July 7, 2017).
• Untitled Spider-Man reboot will be released on July 7, 2017 (original release date: July 28, 2017).
• Star Wars: Episode VIII will be released on December 15, 2017 (original release date: May 26, 2017).

Johnny Depp will be reprising his role as Captain Jack Sparrow with Geoffrey Rush returning as Barbossa and Orlando Bloom as Will Turner. Javier Bardem will be playing the new antagonist, Captain Salazar. The film is directed by Joachim Rønning and Espen Sandberg.
