Cloverfield sequel trailer leaked online?! (Update)

Update: The official trailer and poster have been released after the leak.

Completely out of left field, a leaked trailer has surfaced claiming to be the long-awaited sequel to Cloverfield. Hard to believe it’s only been 8 years since the first film, a time when the careers of JJ Abrams, Drew Goddard and Matt Reeves have launched into the highest levels of Hollywood. The success of Cloverfield naturally created a fanbase yearning for a sequel. In countless interviews over the years, Abrams, along with Reeves and Goddard, expressed interest in doing a sequel, but they didn’t know when it would be feasibly possible to do it, given how busy their schedules have become.

Yesterday, it has been confirmed by Paramount Pictures and JJ Abrams that a film connected to Cloverfield will premiere this March. The movie is titled 10 Cloverfield Lane. What we currently know is that the film stars John Goodman, Mary Elizabeth Winstead, and John Gallagher, Jr.  The film is directed by Dan Trachtenberg, who directed the Portal: No Escape short. It is written by relatively unknown writers Josh Campbell and Matthew Stueken.

Oddly enough, Trachtenberg was originally attached to another Bad Robot film prior called Valencia or The Cellar, which was to be produced by Abrams and stars Mary Elizabeth Winstead, John Gallagher Jr and John Goodman. She even talked about the film in an interview as far back as March of last year. In the interview she did, she revealed a few details of the film’s plot.

“I was at Bad Robot the other day, and they showed me the trailer for it, which looks really cool. I’m excited. It’s going to be really interesting. It’s basically my character wakes up in a cellar and I’m being kept down there by John Goodman. He tells me that basically the world is over outside because there’s been a nuclear fall-out. It does have similarity to Faults, in some ways, because you don’t know who’s telling the truth or who to believe. There’s a lot of, who’s manipulating who, and all of that. Tonally, it’s very different, but it has some of those same themes.”

She also mentions a seeing a trailer, which also happened to leak today and completely fits the details she explained in the interview. The trailer is said to be attached to 13 Hours. JJ released an official statement following the leaked news of the film’s existence.

“The idea came up a long time ago during production. We wanted to make it a blood relative of Cloverfield. The idea was developed over time. We wanted to hold back the title for as long as possible.”

The “Blood Relative” part of is statement interesting, it gives me the impression that the film is not a direct sequel. Then why even put “Cloverfield” in the name? Judging from the trailer, it does seem like there is something else going on above ground. They did mention nuclear fallout and the first film ended with a nuclear bomb. Maybe they are trapped in the city after the bomb and something survived? Whatever the case maybe, I look forward to any updates on this film and can’t wait to see it.

10 Cloverfield Lane hits theaters March 11th.
