Andy Serkis rejects Supreme Leader Snoke is Darth Plagueis theory

We have three new Star Wars: The Force Awakens photos released via EW, and it shows off Supreme Leader Snoke (Andy Serkis) and Maz Kanata (Lupita Nyong’o). In addition to the photos, an interview has surfaced with Serkis talking about his character.

There is a theory out there that Supreme Leader Snoke is actually Darth Plagueis. One interesting “hint” to back up that theory was how John Williams’ The Force Awakens track, “Snoke”, was similar to “Palpatine’s Teachings” in Revenge of the Sith. In the latter, Palpatine tells Anakin about how Darth Plagueis had the power to save lives.

Serkis was asked about the theory, and he denies that Snoke is Darth Plagueis. He goes on to explain that the character does know what happened in the “earlier films,” and that he’s a new character.

“Supreme Leader Snoke is quite an enigmatic character, and strangely vulnerable at the same time as being quite powerful,” Serkis said. “Obviously he has a huge agenda. He has suffered a lot of damage. As I said, there is a strange vulnerability to him, which belies his true agenda, I suppose.”

He talks about the conception of Snoke.

“When we first started working on it, he had some rough notions of how Snoke was gonna look, but it really hadn’t been fully-formed and it almost came out of discussion and performance.”

Serkis explains why Snoke had to be computer generated.

“The scale of him, for instance, is one reason,” Serkis said. “He is large. He appears tall. And also just the facial design — you couldn’t have gotten there with prosthetics. It’s too extreme. Without giving too much away at this point, he has a very distinctive, idiosyncratic bone structure and facial structure. You could never have done it [in real life.]”

Snoke is a very mysterious character, so fans will continue to come up with different theories. Until then, we’ll have to wait until Star Wars: Episode VIII comes out or when information is leaked.
