Legendary Pictures officially announces Godzilla vs King Kong trilogy

Godzilla vs King Kong

It’s official people! For that past month, we have been reporting on the news that Legendary Pictures was moving the heaven and earth to get the franchise of Godzilla and King Kong under one studio. Well now that Legendary has both of Hollywood’s largest stars under Warner Brothers, they have officially announced their Kaiju showdown trilogy which will conclude with Godzilla vs King Kong.

In the announcement, the release dates were revealed for the three films. The long developed King Kong reboot, KONG: Skull Island, would be released on March 10, 2017. Godzilla 2 will return with the original team of director Gareth Edwards and screenwriter Max Borenstein on June 8, 2018, and Godzilla vs King Kong is slated to hit theaters in 2020.

It is also worth noting that the official release does state that Legendary would be uniting Godzilla, King Kong and “other iconic monsters.” It has been teased for quite some time now that Legendary may bring some of Toho’s other legendary monsters into the franchise. Judging from the press release, I think the fans just got an indirect yes. One thing is for certain is that the Monarch organization that appeared in the first Godzilla film will continually appear throughout the trilogy. There is no word yet if Ken Watanabe is expected to reprise his role as Dr. Ishiro Serizawa.

Production on Kong: Skull Island begins October 19th.

Who would you like to see appear in the trilogy alongside Godzilla and King Kong? Let us know in the comments below.
