Tetsuya Nomura explains Kingdom Hearts 2.8 title

kingdom hearts 2.8

Kingdom Hearts II.8 HD (aka 2.8) is definitely a strange title, but according to Kingdom Hearts designer Tetsuya Nomura, there is a simple answer to explain how the number came together.

While KH 1.5 and 2.5 HD ReMIX were remastered versions of the Final Mix PS2 games. 2.8 does the same. How so? According to Nomura, Dream Drop Distance HD is like Kingdom Hearts 2.6. It takes place after the events of the second game. With Kingdom Hearts Birth by Sleep being the prequel to the KH series, it fits as KH 0.1, which is how KH 0.2 Birth By Sleep -A Fragmentary Passage- got its unique name.

So what about Kingdom Hearts χ (chi),Kingdom Hearts Unchained χ, and Kingdom Hearts χ Back Cover? According to Nomura these games are part of the zero story since they don’t feature Sora.

So by adding 2.6 + 0.2 + 0 you get 2.8, which is how the name came together. So mainly they just needed a name and since KH3 is already in use, they wanted it to fit in the existing story they just came up with.
