D23 Expo: Captain America: Civil War footage description

Today at D23 Expo, Anthony Mackie and Chris Evans were on hand to help debut the first footage from the highly anticipated Captain America: Civil War.

The footage begins with 3 New Avengers members, Captain America, Falcon and Black Widow, scouting an African shantytown. “Eyes on target,” says Cap. As Falcon is atop the rooftop, he says, “Red Wing launch.” A winged-drone is released and dives onto the streets, swooping beneath a truck loaded with explosives. Black Widow in a café says, “It’s a battering ram.” As the three close in on the truck, we see Crossbones (with mask) coming out of the truck. He spots Captain America closing in on them, so he throws a magnetic bomb onto Cap’s vibranium shield. Cap quickly throws the shield into the sky just as it detonates.

Crossbones proceeds to pummel the unarmed Cap. The rest of Crossbones’ crew arrive and fire upon Falcon. He blocks the fire with his wings and Widow springs into action by flipping through the air, taking out three of Crossbones goons. Scene switches back to the Crossbones and Cap fight as we see Cap continuing to get beat by Crossbones “That’s for dropping a building on my face,” Crossbones says. Cap retaliates ripping off one of the gauntlets and Crossbones quickly draws the blade from his other gauntlet, Assassin’s Creed style. Cap blocks the attack, throws a few blows, breaks his other gauntlet, and kicks Crossbones hard as he rips off his mask in the process. Looking defeated, Crossbones says, “You know… He remembered you. Your pal, your buddy… Your Bucky.” Cap replies with, “What did you say?”

We cut to the Marvel Studios logo as a voiceover of Secretary of State Thaddeus “Thunderbolt” Ross. “The world owes you an unpayable debt,” he says as clips of Captain America’s heroism plays on screen. “While a great many people see you as a hero, there are some who prefer the word: vigilante. People are afraid.” Cap clearly looks annoyed. “This job, we try to save as many as we can. Sometimes that doesn’t mean everybody.”

Cut to a scene from the end of Ant-Man, where we see Bucky’s arm caught in a mechanical vice of some sort. “Buck…” Cap says, “ you know me?” Bucky replies, “Your mom’s name was Sarah. You used to wear newspapers in your shoes.” Cap clearly looks touched that he got his best friend back. We see a shot of Captain America and Bucky side-by-side entering a building.

Now, we see a shot of Tony Stark as he tells Cap, “Sometimes I want to punch you in your perfect teeth.” “Something has happened. Something that can’t be undone,” he continues. “The world wants heroes to stay heroes, but they need to be regulated. Controlled.” As Tony is saying this, we see a montage of the various heroes in the film (no Spider-Man): Scarlet Witch, The Vision in a suit, Hawkeye with his bow and arrow, Black Panther, and Iron Man and War Machine standing side-by-side.

We see the two sides, Team Iron Man and Team Captain America, on opposite sides as they charging towards each other. The two sides start fighting. Hawkeye and Black Widow start going at it as Widow asks, “we’re still friends right?” “Depends on how hard you hit me,” Hawkeye replies.

The final scene consists of Team Captain America having a meeting in a public parking lot with a white van. As Hawkeye opens the van, we see Scott Lang sleeping in the van. As he gets out of the van, he begins to geek out over meeting Captain America for the first time. “Captain America…” Lang says as he starts shaking Cap’s hand. And shakes it some more… And some more… “I’m shaking your hand too long,” he says. Spinning around he tells Scarlet Witch, “I know you too! You’re great.” As Scott continues to make things awkward, he tells Cap, “I want to say I know you know a lot of super people, so thinks for thanking of me.” Realizing his mistake, he says, “Thanks for thinking of me.”
