Merry Christmas Microsoft fans, today is the day we have long been waiting for. Microsoft has begun the rollout of Windows 10 which will be bringing the new Edge Browser, Personal Assistant Cortana, and much more. If you are impatient like me, there may be a way to manually trigger the shiny new Windows 10 update on your PC right now in just a few easy steps!

1. Make sure your Win 8 device is set to download its updates automatically. Access the settings menu and select ‘Change PC Settings’. Choose ‘Update and recovery’ and then select ‘Choose how updates get installed’. Select the method you prefer and check the boxes that say ‘Recommended Updates’ and Microsoft Update’.

2. Now you are going to want to run a command prompt in administrator mode. To do this access your charms menu and type ‘Command’. You will then see the button to click on that accesses the CMD window, but be sure to right click it and select run as Administrator. Once the window is open simply type wuauclt.exe/updatenow

Now I am in the process of making this work myself and will update this article with my results. There are a near limitless amount of variables that dictate whether this trick to help you force the update will be successful or not. Just giving this trick a shot is harmless, so give it a shot and let us know if it works for you in the comments below!

UPDATE: IT WORKED! After typing the command into the prompt, I attempted to search for updates with no luck. After letting it sit for 30-40 minutes I decided to shut the PC down completely and start it back up and instantly in ‘Desktop Mode’. The update scan was already running and came up with the notification that Windows 10 was ready to install.. I am 8% into the upgrade process and will update here how it goes.

UPDATE: Start to finish on the Surface Pro 1 the update from 8.1 to 10 took less than 45 minutes. There were absolutely no problems with the installation.
