Project UROK: Wil Wheaton talks mental health and wants you to know you’re not alone
Bipolar. Depression. Anxiety. Other mental health issues. We have been there or at least, we know someone who has been there. Just know, you’re not alone.
Founded by CollegeHumor’s Jenny Jaffe, Project UROK is a nonprofit organization whose mission is to create funny, meaningful videos for people with mental health issues. According to the site, Project UROK was created to combat isolation and stigmatizion surrounding mental illness. The videos are meant to show teens and adults there are others who have been in that same situation. They are not alone in this struggle. The site also provides resources and message boards for teens to talk about it and get some help.
Actor and geek icon Wil Wheaton sat down with Project UROK to talk about his struggles with mental illness, anxiety, and depression. Wheaton had suffered from generalized anxiety disorder and chronic depression for several years, until he sought for help with the support of his wife.
He ends the video with some advice to the audience, “You are not the only person in the world who has anxiety. You are not the only person in the world who has depression. You’re not the only person in the world who has thoughts of self-harm. There are people who want to help you. There are people who have spent their entire lives helping people like you and me and all of the people that you’re seeing in this video. And you’re not alone. You are okay.”
