Interview with Ookay, EDM artist and video game fan

Ookay is an EDM artist who has recently gotten pretty big, and I had the chance to ask him a few questions about his work and his relations to video games.

Nerd Reactor: Can you tell us a little bit about what inspires you to produce EDM music?

Ookay: I was in a dark place in my life when I discovered Darude’s “Sandstorm”, and it inspired me to produce EDM.

Who has been your favorite artist to collaborate with?

I actually just started a new collaboration with someone last week. I won’t name names, but his names rhymes with 8-track. Also loved working with Scott Sinjin on Echo.

Is there a favorite venue you have that you’ve previously played at? Perhaps one that you intend to play at in the future?

Red Rocks was mind blowing the first time I played and I’ll be returning on May 15th!

We heard that you are actually a huge video game fan. Can you tell us more about that?

Back in the day no one wanted to collab, so I had to play videos games 🙁

What would be your top 5 video games?

Final Fantasy X, The Last of Us, Marvel vs Capcom, Zelda: Ocarina of Time, and Mario Kart (all of them).

[I totally approve.]

Are you looking forward to any coming out?

Star Wars: Battlefront.

Do video games inspire your music in any way?

Absolutely. I definitely catch myself listening to songs from video games. I’d be lying if I said that some of the songs haven’t inspired me to create new music. Some of the main culprits would have to be the Final Fantasy X soundtrack as well as some of the Sonic The Hedgehog OSTs. Some games have great OSTs like most of the Sonic games and of course Final Fantasy. Some of the orchestra composing is fantastic. I’ve actually been to a concert of just game music at Comic-Con.

Do you have a personal favorite track of yours?

Workin’ Sally will always be my jam off my mixtape. How it DIDN’T go platinum is beyond me…

[Listen to it here]

What’s been the weirdest thing to happen to you while playing a live show?

One time I shot $10k out of a confetti blaster while a naked girl ran on stage and jumped on my back. Then Jesus descended from the heavens… with airhorns.

What do you have planned for the future / what can we expect?

Bangers and world peace.

Needless to say, Ookay is my new favorite person. So you should totally check out his music here. I’ve listened to most of it and I really like it! I bet you will too.

You can also follow him on Twitter and like him on Facebook. Don’t forget to check them all out to see what events he has coming up!

You may or may not have seen me dancing around on our YouTube channel. I really love psychology and dissecting shows/film. Also your token anime nerd.
