Money for mods?

steam tomb raiderSteam has launched a new system where modders can get paid for their hard work, essentially turning what was once a feature that was exclusive to PC games, mods, into something closer to resembling a console games DLC.

Tom BuiValve’s┬áTom Bui stated, “We think this is a great opportunity to help support the incredible creative work being done by mod makers in the Steam Workshop. User-generated content is an increasingly significant component of many games, and opening new avenues to help financially support those contributors via Steam Workshop will help drive the level of UGC to new heights.”

I’m very interested to see how this will all work out. As long as I have been playing PC games, mods have been free, and now with users being able to charge what they want for these mods, will the hardcore PC games feel turned off by this?

On the other hand I can see modders taking this serious and putting even better quality into their work. It’s all too soon to tell, and this feature will only work if the game supports mods. The feature will start with Skyrim and most likely expand from there. Only time will tell if it will be a success or not.

What do you think of paying for some thing that was traditionally free?
