Mark Ruffalo explains why we’re not getting a solo Hulk movie from Marvel

Fans have been craving a solo Hulk movie ever since they’ve been captivated by Mark Ruffalo’s performance as Bruce Banner/Hulk in Joss Whedon’s The Avengers. It was thought before that Marvel probably only wanted the Hulk to appear in the Avengers films, but now according to the actor, the reason is because the studio still doesn’t have the rights.

During an interview with Collider, Ruffalo talked about his Marvel contract, the reason why Marvel can’t do a solo Hulk movie, and more.

Ruffalo on his contract:

I think it’s four now, but that could always go further. That could include different—I could show up in another character’s movie; I could do Avengers 3 and 4; I could do a Hulk standalone; I could do a combination of those things. That’s four or five, I think.

Ruffalo on whether he’ll be in Captain America: Civil War:

I don’t know if I’m in it yet. I don’t know. Sometimes these things happen at the last minute in this world. I really don’t know where I fit in from here on out, and I’m not sure they do.

Ruffalo on why there isn’t a solo Hulk movie yet:

As far as a Hulk movie, a standalone Hulk movie, Marvel doesn’t really have the rights to that yet. That’s still Universal’s property, so there’s that issue. That’s a big impediment to moving forward with that. Now I don’t think that’s insurmountable, by the way, but I don’t know where it’s going from here for me.

My question is, how many more years until the contract expires? Perhaps Marvel will be able to get the rights soon, just like how they got Daredevil back.
