The Dark Tower movie in the works again

It has nearly been a decade since the film adaptation of Stephen King’s The Dark Tower was green lit, and recent news claims that the project is once again alive and kicking. Plans to adapt the popular book series to films with a tie-in TV series date back to as far back as 2007.

At one time J.J. Abrams was attached to direct the film, with HBO releasing the series that would take place between movies. Actor Russell Crowe was in line to play the series’ main hero as was Javier Bardem, but any progress on the franchise dissolved when Warner Bros. and HBO backed out in early 2013.

News came out this week that Sony Picture and MRC have decided to revive the project. A new script has been written by LOST’s Akiva Goldsman and Jeff Pinkner. Akiva Goldsman, Ron Howard, Brian Grazer and Erica Huggins, who have all been with the project since the beginning, will produce. No word yet on a director, but even Stephen King is happy to finally see some new progress.

“I’m excited that ‘The Dark Tower’ is finally going to appear on the screen. Those who have traveled with Roland and his friends in their search for the Dark Tower are going to have their long-held hopes fully realized. This is a brilliant and creative approach to my books.”
