We got some new and big Star Wars information for you. The name of the first Star Wars stand-alone film is revealed starring Felicity Jones and directed by Gareth Edwards (Godzilla) and Rian Johnson’s Star Wars: Episode VIII now has a release date.

The first Star Wars spin-off movie will be called Rogue One. The release date for Episode VIII will be May 26, 2017. It’s reported before that Rian Johnson (Looper) would be writing and directing Star Wars: Episode VIII. Now Disney is making it official.

The news was revealed today during a shareholder meeting with CEO Bob Iger at the Palace of Fine Arts in San Francisco, which is across the street from Lucasfilm.

Luke Skywalker was a Rogue Leader, aka Rogue One. It’s given to those who are commanding the Rogue Squadron, an elite Rebel Alliance starfighter squadron. Does this mean Jones will be leading the squadron?

Chris Weitz (Cinderella, About a Boy, Antz) is working on the script for Rogue One. Felicity Jones (The Amazing Spider-Man 2), who’s starring in the film, was recently nominated for an Academy Award for her role in The Theory of Everything. ILM visual effects supervisor and chief creative officer John Knoll came with the idea for the story, and he’ll be the executive producer along with Simon Emanuel (The Dark Knight Rises, Fast & Furious 6) and Jason McGatlin (Tintin, War of the Worlds).

The film begins shooting this summer in London and will be coming to theaters on December 16, 2016.
