Star Wars VIII & IX will focus on Luke and Leia?

The Sony leak is like Christmas for nerds. It’s the gift that keeps on giving, except if you’re working for Sony Pictures. With J.J. Abrams bouncing out of directing Star Wars after The Force Awakens, Rian Johnson will be stepping in as director and writer for Episode VIII and XI.

Now we have news from a Sony email that reveals what we can expect from Episode VIII and IX. On September 20, 2014, President of Production for Columbia Pictures Michael De Luca talked about the Star Wars films with Sony Pictures head Amy Pascal, saying that it will be “Luke and Leia” storylines. He also takes a jab at screenwriter Gary Whitta (Godzilla) for working on After Earth. Whitta is tasked with writing the spin-off Star Wars movie directed by Gareth Edwards (Godzilla).

“Star Wars: Any studio would have lost josh trank and rian Johnson to this, it’s freaking Star Wars. Your After Earth writer Gary Whitta is writing Gareth Edwards stand alone Star Wars film. Simon Kinberg is writing Josh Tranks. No one knows what they’re about but Boba Fett is rumored to be the subject of one. Rian Johnson as you know is doing the main ones, episodes 8 and 9 of the Luke and Leia story lines, after JJ. Not sure anything is gained by looking at what Lucasfilm is doing except we are stalking all these people too, except Whitta whom I think blows.”

Of course, take this with a grain of salt, since De Luca isn’t working with Disney on the film, but since he’s got a high position at Columbia Pictures, he may know something.

Are you looking forward to Luke and Leia on the big screen again?
