Block N Load, a new game from Jagex

Last Thursday, Jagex announced a new game. Yay! If you haven’t heard about it yet, it’s called Block N Load, and it’s loads of fun. It’s a first person shooter, mixed with some strategic construction. Meaning, not only do we get to shoot stuff, but we get to build with blocks; like Minecraft but with guns. Eh?  Nerd Reactor got the chance to play the game and boy it was not what I expected – in a good way I promise!

So first off, let’s talk about the characters. There are six of them in total, all with different perks and personalities. We have Cogwheel, who is a super bad-ass robot. Then there’s “Doc” Eliza Doolally, the crazy, mad scientist of the bunch. The Brooklyn construction worker guy goes by the name of Anthony Tony Turretto. Sergeant Sarge Stone is exactly who he sounds like. Next is Nigel Longshot, who is a very English man with intentions to hunt. You know, kind of like that guy from Jumanji. Lastly, we have my favorite character to play with – O-P Juan Shinobi. Yes, that’s right – a Mexican ninja. Isn’t that perfect?

So what do we do with these characters? We build a team. Two teams – five members. You build up a fortress around your base to make it difficult for the opposing team to win. Bullets, turrets, bombs, ninja stars, Block N Load dabbles in everything. But not only do we focus on getting kills, we focus on protecting our generators.

Generators play an important role in this game. Each team has one, and you can kill each other millions of times. However, if you don’t take down that generator, you’re not going to win. The point of protecting your base is to make it as hard as possible for the other team to get to the generator. Once they’re there, if you don’t kill them quick, then say goodbye to winning!

There are two separate maps. One is pretty basic. Still fun, just a bit more simple. You only have one generator to take down, and the path to get there isn’t difficult at all, leaving out the fact that your enemies probably have plenty of turrets and obstacles surrounding it. It’s really well done, and definitely serves as a map to get started on. If you’re a first-time player, like I once was, then the first map is fantastic. The second one is a bit more challenging. You have three generators to take down, and you can get lost. Well, maybe if you’re me. It’s much bigger, and has a lot more difficulties to get through. If you’re an experienced player, then this one is just for you. I’m assuming that more maps will eventually be released, but for now, these two are just dandy!

The game itself isn’t like Ace of Spades, which is what a lot of people I believe thought. The overall feel to it is sort of like Minecraft, mixed with any FPS, and also has a TF2 kind of vibe. It’s very different. On top of all of that, it is extremely fun to play. Come home from work and want to take your mind off stuff? Play Block N Load. Have a stressful week and wanna let off some steam? Play the game! Honestly, guys.

Block N Load is still in development for the PC, but Jagex is saying it will be released by 2015 on Steam for only $19.99. You can also get a special edition version for $29.99. Is it worth it? In my opinion, yes. It’s a game I had loads of fun playing, and would spend my money on in the future. So have a look at some of the pictures below, and let us know what you think! “What The Block You Gonna Do?”
