Why ABC’s ‘Selfie’ should be saved

SELFIEI was sad to hear that ABC decided to cancel Selfie.

Sure, the title of the show seems very self-absorbed… and honestly, it is. It’s about a self-absorbed social media hungry girl trying to make it big on the internet. Who doesn’t relate to this? We live in a society where we measure ourselves by our social media presence – more followers, more likes, more friends, and more power. This means we are finally popular, right? But, this show isn’t about that. This show is really shining the light on getting away from that and bringing us back to the real world (or in internet terms: IRL).

When was the last time you were able to carry on a dinner conversation without the urge to check your phone? My brother and sister-in-law have a rule: NO cell phones during dinner, but those who don’t have this rule – how often do you check your phone? It’s very tempting, since you have Facebook, Twitter, Tumblr, Instagram, Tinder, Snapchat, and the many other new social media sites popping up every day (Ello is the new thing, right?). Taking photos of our food, posting cute selfies, and writing our opinions on everything has become a daily routine. Even the word ‘Selfie’ has been inducted into the Oxford Dictionary. We are the generation of the Internet. It’s about time they create a show about that.

In Selfie, we are watching a modern day Eliza Doolittle (from My Fair Lady) in modern times and Henry Higgs (Higgens in My Fair Lady) trying to change her to become a better person, and it’s helping us. With every lesson Eliza is learning, we take a piece of it and we see a change in her.

Not only does the show have a great moral purpose, it also stars two of the biggest geek icons: Karen Gillan (of Doctor Who and Guardians of the Galaxy fame) and John Cho (of Star Trek). If you are a geek, this is your show. Sure, it doesn’t have sci-fi in it, there are no blue box, final frontier and blood. You’re not going to get that. It’s a romantic comedy. But, they do have references to geekery – internet slang, dancing Power Rangers, K-Pop references, and many small things. If the show were to go on, who knows what other geek Easter eggs we could had gotten. It also allows us to see more of Gillan and Cho. Who doesn’t want that?

Maybe there is a chance we could #SaveSelfie and let @ABCNetwork know how much we care about the show. There are several online petitions asking ABC to reconsider. Let’s SAVE SELFIE!
